Shoplifting - Does Anyone Care?
Statistics show that Shoplifting is something that many people have done, and whist it will not be something they are proud of most of the time it will have been when they were young and the item will be of very low value. There may be signs in all shops that say shoplifters will be prosecuted, often this does not happen.
During a recent conversation with a 16 year old friend of the family it became apparent to me that whilst this person would not 'steal' physical goods and in fact…

Does CCTV Still Work
There are cameras all over the place and some are clearly more effective than others.
Plus there are concerns from the Police that the quality of the picture is not going to be clear enough to allow for a conviction, if the pictures are to be used as evidence in a court of law. If the person is caught while they are still on the premises, seeing themselves on CCTV may be enough to get them to confess, but is this technology is not going to be as effective as was once thought is a…

On-line Credit Card Fraud
I am an E-commerce consultant and I also own and operate an on-line business. Recently, a handful of new customers have been placing a string of orders and their transactions were authorized with CVV and 3-D Secure matches.
It was by pure coincidence that I was able to spot that multiple orders were being shipped to the same address but to customers with different names. I was puzzled. Why so many orders to different customers from the same…

Nigerian Scammers caught out by Scam Baiting and show bad Photoshop skills

As a user of the Internet, I’m sure you already know all about Nigerian email scammers (if not, email me, I have a business proposition you might be interested in). Scambaiters are a group of people who fight back against the scammers by leading them on for comedic gain. One of the things they do is ask the scammers to send photos of themselves doing ridiculous things. Sometimes they oblige but other times they will try…

On-Line Fraud and Mobile device Trojans are on the increase
The mobile device rate of adoption is increasing among consumers so it is only logical that criminals will find a way to exploit devices such as smartphones, tablets, etc. In September, 2010 a Gartner analyst said, "because of the improving browser experiences on smartphones, mobile commerce and transaction execution are set to increase rapidly." Gartner also reported that by 2014, about 12% of all e-commerce transactions will be made using smartphones and other mobile devices, but fraud…

Proportion Distortion
Last week’s Daily Mail headline about a boss who frog-marched his employee to the police station with a sign saying ‘thief’ around his neck after he tried to defraud him of £800 screamed of injustice. Here was a law-abiding citizen who had to pay £13,000 after a former employee claimed civil damages for humiliation while the dishonest member of staff gets off scot free.
But like many media…

UK to Sign up to EU Directive on Cyber Crime
The UK is to sign up to the proposed EU directive on attacks against information systems under government plans to tackle cyber crime and improve defences against terrorist-inspired cyber attacks.
But a statement of British intent in the Commons from Home Affairs Minister James Brokenshire came under immediate attack from Tory eurosceptic MPs Brokenshire said the directive would "ensure that there is a basic set of agreed minimum rules in relation to online crimes and penalties across…

Device Fingerprinting and Mobile Transactions Were on the Rise in 2010; What's in Store for Fraud Prevention in 2011?

The National Fraud Authority (NFA) said that if the total cost was broken down, every UK adult would be £765 worse off.
The NFA said "a stronger counter-fraud culture" was needed.
Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said the £21bn cost of public sector fraud could pay for 800 secondary schools…
